Affordances

The idea of affordances, what an environment offers, draws our attention to what a space makes possible or invites us to do. A chair offers a place to sit. A bed offers a place to sleep. But homes are also full of quieter, less obvious invitations that shape daily habits.

A book within reach can invite reading; fruit visible on a table can encourage nourishing choices; clear floor space can invite movement. A table permanently covered in clutter, on the other hand, can make creativity, cooking or time together less likely. Design concerns the behaviour a space makes easy, difficult, obvious or almost impossible, as well as what it contains.

HomeBeing works backwards from this idea as a design tool: we begin with life before choosing furniture. What do you want to do at home? Rest? Move? Create? Talk? Read? Then we ask how the space could invite that activity with as little effort as possible.
