Biophilic design

Biophilic design embraces the idea that human beings are deeply connected to the living world. These connections have taken shape through millennia of intertwined existence. For most of human history, people lived in direct contact with nature and landscape, daylight, weather, plants, water, animals, the seasons and natural materials. Our bodies evolved within these surroundings and the rhythms of life, not apart from them.

Bringing nature into our immediate surroundings therefore involves more than a few houseplants. It can mean changing daylight, fresh air, views, organic forms, natural textures, water, seasonal objects, edible plants and the daily act of caring for something that lives, grows and thrives.

HomeBeing asks what happens when nature becomes a precious relationship within our everyday surroundings, as well as the view through a window. Perhaps home can remind the body that it belongs to a larger living system, and that wellbeing is something our surroundings can support, or fail to support, as well as an individual concern.
